"Sometimes we need to burn our bridges in order to walk ahead."

London 3/5

December 31th, 2007, New Year’s Eve
Weather: cloudy, after 10pm rain
Song of the day:
Hillsong – In your freedom

Because of the few hours we have spent in bed sleeping we get up later today. The luxurious (haha) shower takes us another few minutes, of course. Being too late for breakfast we have our very first traditional English breakfast at Sainsbury’s - an absolute adventure. Not everyone gets one (but, one of us is too late (haha) ordering it 2 minutes past 12am). But thank God it's not too late for a visit to the Baden-Powell house. And of course who ever goes to England must see Big Ben and Westminster Abbey! That’s exactly where we're going. After that: The Thames. Oh wow, that is so so so cool. The day is just dusking and we are walking downwards the Thames… we, of course, stop very often to take some good (or less) photographs. Our dinner we have at the legendary Subway restaurant. Not being ashamed of it we now know all important fast-food restaurants: Mc (of course), BK (who does not?!), Sub, Pizza Hut and KFC. It isn’t that expensive and the taste is quite tolerable, so why not?!
Surely, we also see the great Tower Bridge, I would have been sad if we hadn’t. Walking itself is absolutely exciting. My eyes are stuck on the towers, the lights and the dark sky behind it.
The darker the evening gets and the sooner the midnight seems the more exciting I am.
We spend the 2 hours to midnight on the street of Victoria Embankment… there're lots and lots of people (700.000 as the newspaper reports the next day) and as expected (haha) it starts raining. Not heavily - but for me - a soft soothing rain, kissing my cheeks.
12 pm: A great firework (unfortunately only 10 minutes), screaming and cheering people around us and the best sound I’ve ever experienced on New Year’s Eve (amazing, amazing!!).
But the adventure itself hasn't begun yet. It begins at 0.10am: the question is, how to get to the next (haha) Underground station where tubes are actually ‘moving’?
Though this journey is more than hazardous I experience the following hours as magical and very very beautiful and though there are thousands of people nearly killing each other while trying to get around a corner I feel totally safe, good and very peaceful…
